There were two main reasons why I went to get myself a iPad:
1) Kindle. I am running out of space at home for my books. Having ebooks will enable me to read without worrying finding space to put my books.
2) Watching video without sitting in front of my PC. With iPad I can now watch video anywhere.
And after playing around with my iPad for the past few days, I can safely say the iPad fulfilled both and more.
It was not that straight forward to purchase books off Amazon for Kindle on iPad. However upon successfully purchasing ebooks, the ebooks were pushed down to the Kindle on iPad. Reading on Kindle was a wonderful experience, with a flick of my finger, it displayed the next page. While I believe it is easier for the eyes to get tired reading on a iPad than a Kindle, at least the iPad is sold officially in Singapore, while we are still waiting for the Kindle to be here after so long.
To purchase ebooks on Amazon, follow the steps given in Jeff’s Blog. As to the VPN, I tried a few free ones, and most of them were slow and unreliable. In the end I am quite pleased with VPNReactor, a free VPN service with servers located in US. It has been quite reliable so far, and the speed is fast enough for me.
A word of caution, you have to use a VPN service with servers located in US. The first time that I did not, I receive an email from Amazon asking me to verify that I was in US.
[Updated 25 Dec 2011] TunnelBear is a pretty good VPN to use. However, there is a need to install their application to use it.

Hi,
How do you download the kindle app off iTunes store ?
wenjie
I am guessing your account created in iTunes has a country, say Singapore where Kindle is not available.
What you need to do is to create another iTunes account, this time with country US. Once you sign in with this new account, iTunes will automatically bring you to the USA iTunes site. You can then get Kindle from there.

Did you purchase with credit card? Do you need to put a US billing address as well?
Kelvin
Oops.. Entered wrong email just now.

I am assuming you meant purchasing the eBooks for Kindle. I purchased the eBooks using the Amazon Gift Card. You can following the instructions here :
http://jeffyen.blogspot.com/2009/06/amazon-kindle-2-in-singapore.html
Purchase the Gift Card for yourself using a credit card. Send the gift card to your email address. Then apply it to your Amazon account when the gift card arrives in your email.

Uhm, do you need a US registered bank to match credit card details to the new US ITunes account? Cos I tried it with my existing card & registration wouldn’t process precisely for this reason =P
wenjie
It is possible to create a US iTunes account without a credit card. If you try using a credit card, they will verify to see if it is a US registered bank.
To create a US iTunes account without a credit card, you can follow these steps from Apple :

Wenjie, that was awesome. I just installed my Kindle. THANK YOU!!!

Hi can I ask if I create another iTunes account from us, will the iPad wipe out my other apps from the previous account? Wat happens when I sync?
Thanks a lot
wenjie
No it won’t. If you have some apps from SG iTunes account and some apps from US iTunes account for eg, during sync they won’t be wipe out. I am having both SG iTunes and US iTunes apps on my iPad and they sync fine.
SK
Woo thank you for guidance!

Are you traveling outside your country?
Please contact customer service in order to continue purchasing Kindle items.
Did you recently move to a new country?
You can easily update your country for your Amazon account”
wenjie
You will need to change your Amazon account to a US address.

1. Connect to VPNReactor. Make sure you choose the USA server. To confirm, go to this site:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/
It should say you are somewhere in USA. If not, check VPNReactor website on how to connect correctly.
2. Go to Manage your Kindle at the Kindle product page in Amazon.
3. Go to ‘your country’ and edit your country if it’s not the US. Use any US address.
4. Go to your account, ‘manage payment options’, and erase your credit card info if you have any credit cards associated with Amazon.com .
5. Turn off 1-Click ordering for your Amazon account.
6. Buy a gift card, say USD100 and send the gift card to your email address. When you receive it in the email, apply the gift amount to your Amazon account.
7. Go to your account, ‘manage payment options’, and erase your credit card info. Do this step everytime you use your credit card.
8. Now you can go ahead and buy any ebook to have it deliver to the Kindle on your iPad.

Already looking forward to buying an iPad 2 when it comes out 🙂 the Kindle App is already available on my default store (Philippines). Couple of questions —
1) do I have to do the same jumping through hoops in order to purchase Kindle eBooks?
2) how do I load them into the iPad? Is it the same as the Kindle where it has to be via USB? Or can I download them through wifi?
Thanks!
mickey
Oh, and forgot to add — iTunes store is Philippines, but I currently live in Singapore (moved here last year)

Hi Wenjie
I installed the kindle on my ipad and bought a book from Amazon without using the VPN. I received an email from Amazon for verification too. What should I do from here? Did I need to reply Amazon?
Looking forward to your reply. Thank you.
wenjie
I too received the email from Amazon before. I ignored the email. So far, Amazon has not done anything to my account yet. Though I strongly suggest you start using a VPN for eBook purchases now.
