It seems like Amazon not shipping the Kindle 2 to Singapore might be a blessing after all.

Amazon made a wrong move to use AT&T as its global partner. It should design a Kindle with a SIM card slot, so that users of each country can just buy their own data plan and connect to the web by paying their own Telcos without incurring roaming charges. my guess is that Amazon is also earning from the data roaming charges by sharing profits with AT&T.

I have a feeling Amazon is just lazy to strike deals with each country’s telcos. Instead they just rely on AT&T for every country.
Or it could be like you said, they want to earn from the data roaming charges.

Hey ML, the funny thing about your article is that even with the existing Kindle 2, users do not incur roaming charges. Users don’t pay a single cent when using the wireless service to download books.
Amazon covers the cost of wireless 3G access. Users don’t pay nothin. What would be the point of adding a SIM card slot? Now users will have to pay not just for the books, but also the data plan. Sure, I’ll pay for it, but do you think the general population of the world would even care about paying extra when books can be downloaded over BitTorrent so easily?
Read the technical specs in Amazon before posting your false comments.
